GivingTuesday Community Leaders’ Summit
Since its launch in 2013, the GivingTuesday movement has grown in awareness, participation and impact. Much of the success of GivingTuesday is due to a distributed model where leaders in countries and communities around the world step up to organize and lead local campaigns.
In Canada there are now local GivingTuesday movements from Newfoundland to Vancouver Island, and the number of campaigns has grown from 1 in 2014 to over 40 in 2018. Canadian organizers decided to convene our first ever Leaders’ Summit on June 28th, 2018. New and existing community leadership teams got together in Toronto to share best practices, grow the movement and strengthen the capacity of non-profits in communities across the country.
Empowering communities for meaningful change
Attendance was excellent, with a total of 46 delegates present. Leaders came from about 25 communities across Canada, including Vancouver Island, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Windsor, Toronto, Montreal, Halifax and Prince Edward Island, to name a few.
The summit focused on the power of GivingTuesday to ignite cross-sector collaboration in ways that have real impact on communities. The programming was designed to foster and strengthen communities across Canada with sessions specifically to engage organizations, businesses and supporters.
It’s all about the leaders!
GivingTuesday leaders come from a wide range of organizations, including Universities, charities, Community Foundations and United Ways. Despite their diverse platforms, the leaders have a lot in common:
- They are passionate about their communities
- They are motivated by the opportunity to bring people together
- They work well across networks
- They are low-ego leaders who make their community partners feel like the campaign heroes
Learning from one another
The day began with a fascinating keynote from Henry Timms, founder of GivingTuesday and author of the new bestseller New Power. The rest of the agenda was packed with interactive sessions from experts such as Jamie MacDonald from the GivingTuesday Global team, as well as our GivingTuesday leaders themselves, sharing case studies, experiences, learning and best practices. There was also a fascinating presentation “What the data tells us”, which detailed the latest quantitative data around impact, during GivingTuesday and beyond the day, in Canada and around the world.
The summit content also included 3 workshop-style breakout sessions where leaders worked in small groups to brainstorm and develop specific action plans for
- stakeholder engagement
